New geopolitical thinking – The rise of geoeconomics

Today, we are witnessing the emergence of a new economic and geopolitical world order, with two dominant characteristics: the rivalry between the United States and China and the open use of economic instruments to achieve strategic objectives. 2008 marked a shift in Western thinking about the relationship between the economy and security, and this process culminated in the mid-2010s.

The change in geopolitical thinking is due to three main reasons:

The first is the realignment of global economic powers: in other words the economic decline of the United States and Europe, coupled with China’s rapid economic rise.

The second is the disintegrating social cohesion in the West. The inequalities between countries have been reduced relative to the 1990s, but, especially after the 2008 financial crisis, the difference between the winners and losers highlights the drawbacks of free trade.

The third is that the difference in the political and economic systems between the United States and China stokes the strategic rivalry between the two great powers.
